During June and July 2021 we reviewed the sustainability of the volunteering programme at Abbotsford House, the historic home of Sir Walter Scott, near Melrose, Scottish Borders. The study included extensive consultation with staff, trustees and volunteers, as well as a review of other volunteering programmes in the heritage and visitor attraction sectors. The review demonstrated how successful and important the programme was at Abbotsford where over 100 volunteers contribute via a range of different roles. Our report included a small number of recommendations on how the volunteering programme could, potentially, be improved and sustained.
